Your Gun-Your Responsibility!

When you lose a loved one, especially to violence, you want someone to be held responsible. In Jack's case, it's clear that there were many controllable factors that lead to his death. There never should have been a huge party with underage drinking going on, especially with an adult present. The fight that Jack & his friends were in never should have escalated. And a minor, especially one who had been in trouble before, never should have had access to a handgun. In Colorado, it is illegal for a minor to own a handgun. But what about an adult that owns a gun and then is irresponsible with it, such as leaving it unattended and accessible to a minor? Allegedly, Jack's shooter stole the gun he used to kill Jack from his mother's boyfriend. How did he know where the gun was kept? Why wasn't it locked safely away? And why isn't the owner of that gun being held responsible in some way?
According to http://davekopel.org/2A/IP/HowStrict.htm, "Senate Bill 254 (which is currently in a conference committee), would amandatory one year minimum sentence on any adult who transfers a handgun to a juvenile, regardless of the circumstances". This is a proposal being put before Congress. There are many aspects to this law that people find unfair. However, isn't it right that when it comes to minors, adults be held somewhat responsible? Regardless of whether the owner of the gun that shot Jack actually gave the gun to the shooter or was just blatantly irresponsible in his ownership of the gun, it was his gun. Where is his accountability?

  1. There are other laws that were broken. Child endangerment, at least, how about 50 counts of that alone-what is up with the police and district attorneys there? If this happened in PA, the DA's would chew them up and spit them out! They can press all kinds of corruption of children, and related charges. I say where did they get their law degree? They should be terminated-they know they can press other charges, why aren't they? Look into it-sounds corrupt. If it was their son, they would press all the charges they could, right?

  2. What about the neighbors there, why did they hear a huge party and not call the police? They should be ashamed too, do they live there and know that these people are not 21 yrs old? What about the kids there? How come they weren't charged with underage drinking? Too much paperwork for the police? They should all loose their license the parents too, the gun owner too-this is seriously unbelievable, there are sooo many charges that can be pressed, no ones pressing them-Jacks Dad loved him dearly, is this what Colorado is gonna do for him-nothing? This is a message to parents that sure give your kids your guns, let them party the DA and police will do nothing if someone is killed-thats what I'm hearing from this. Let your kids party drink at your house too, just say your asleep and did not know, so when someone is killed-nothing will happen to you. The kids will not get into trouble either because they are too lazy to press charges! The DA is too dumb to think of charges to press too! The nieghbors will not call the police either, were they there too partying? Unbelievable.
